Background information and principles

The system of medicine called Homeopathy (meaning “similar to the suffering”) has been used in its present form for over 200 years since Dr. Samuel Hahnemann rediscovered and established the principle of "Like cures like" (originally coined by Hippocrates also responsible for the Hippocratic Oath).

This principle is that a substance can cure symptoms similar to those it causes in its concentrated form. An example is coffee, which can keep you awake, but the homeopathic remedy made using coffee can be used to treat sleeplessness.

The human body has a capacity to heal itself and recover from imbalances or disorders in the system. In a person's normal state their healing powers cope with any imbalances to maintain them without symptoms being produced.

At times when this capacity or healing power is challenged, we see the signs of the struggle to recover as symptoms.

The medicine will be chosen to suit an individual, as the homeopathic approach looks beyond a disease label to how it affects that person. In practice, people with the same complaint may need different remedies, but also the same medicine can help people with different complaints, since many of the remedies can be used to treat a wide range of symptoms.

Homeopathic treatment gently encourages your body’s own healing powers to recover health and is suitable for treating people of all age groups, from babies to the elderly. Homeopathy can help in recent, acute or long-standing and chronic health complaints.

All of the body’s parts and systems are interconnected, and constitutional homeopathic treatment can strengthen resistance to illness and improve energy and health overall.

The effect of a homeopathic remedy can be like bump-starting a car: the remedy provides the push to get your whole system going again, but like the car, it then runs under its own power.

Although many of the remedies are made using plants, uniquely homeopathy uses the method of preparation called “potentisation” to release the power of the medicine. It is therefore different from herbal medicine, and also only a tiny amount of the original substance is left in the remedy.
